To illustrate the concepts of metrics to quantify the "greenness" of a chemical reaction: Atom and Step Economy, E factor, Reaction Mass Efficiency, Mass and Solvents Intensity.

After a presentation of the main applications of solvents, the course focuses on solvent design in order to address economy, safety, health and environmental issues, and the efforts to optimize them with the introduction of the new families of solvents or fluids listed above.

Approaching chemical
complexity in a sustainable manner is a mandatory issue in the modern organic
synthesis. In this direction, chemical methodology is featuring an astonishing
growth in term of readily available and not hazardous starting materials, waste
production and minimization of process costs. Several case examples on the use
of innovative reagents/catalysts, capable of replacing obsolete methodologies
in organic transformations will be studied.
