Aims of the course are:

-           to introduce the concepts of integrated management and “waste hierarchy”

-           to know different waste treatment practices in the perspective of improving the circularity of resources

-           to distinguish between recycling and recovery

-           to show the environmental benefits coming from recycling and recovery


Course Unit CE-U2  Waste management

This module provides an overview of the more important EU and some Non-EU regulation about hazardous waste materials and in particular chemical waste materials. The course introduces to the aims and core principles of EU waste hierarchy. In applying the hierarchy hazardous waste producers and waste managers shall opt for hazardous waste management that takes into account the resource value of hazardous wastes, and the need for health and safety to be maintained and delivers the best overall environmental outcome.

1.       To discuss the importance of wastewater treatment

2.       To introduce key constituents of wastewaters, their sources and the monitor parameters

3.       To introduce the main unit operations and the chemical and biological processes involved in wastewater treatment

4.        To illustrate the limitations of the traditional processes and the new challenges of wastewater treatment
