Course Unit CS-U1 Chemical sustainability
Course Unit CS-U2 Green chemistry
To introduce the fundamental concept of efficiency in organic synthesis.
To teach the principles of green and sustainable chemistry applied to synthetic transformations.
To illustrate the concepts of metrics to quantify the "greenness" of a chemical reaction: Atom and Step Economy, E factor, Reaction Mass Efficiency, Mass and Solvents Intensity.
Course Unit CS-U1 Chemical sustainability
Course Unit CS-U3 Chemistry from nature
After a presentation of the main applications of solvents, the course focuses on solvent design in order to address economy, safety, health and environmental issues, and the efforts to optimize them with the introduction of the new families of solvents or fluids listed above.
Course Unit CS-U2 Green chemistry
Approaching chemical
complexity in a sustainable manner is a mandatory issue in the modern organic
synthesis. In this direction, chemical methodology is featuring an astonishing
growth in term of readily available and not hazardous starting materials, waste
production and minimization of process costs. Several case examples on the use
of innovative reagents/catalysts, capable of replacing obsolete methodologies
in organic transformations will be studied.
Course Unit CS-U2 Green chemistry
Course Unit CS-U3 Chemistry from nature
To introduce the basic principles of biocatalysis
To illustrate how biocatalytic processes are an alternative to chemical synthesis
To stimulate students in planning sustainable applications of biocatalysts by selecting proper technologies
To show applications of biocatalytic processes both to large scale industrial transfomations as well as to nanobiotechnological devices.
